South Africa’s Wingshooting involves the hunting of wild birds only. The quarry has to be out thought and hunted providing you with a fantastic experience. Bag limits are on the whole generous enough to enjoy a fantastic day out. There are four different groups of game birds.
- Francolin or Spurfowl. Close relatives to the partridge family, these stately gamebirds are walked up over English pointers. They occur in coveys of 8 to 12 birds and they are regarded by many as the cream of wingshooting in South Africa.
-
Dove and Pigeon shooting is nothing short of spectacular. These are shot over agricultural lands, commonly sunflower and millet from March to June and it is not uncommon for a single gun to shoot off 500 rounds in a day!
-
Wildfowl shooting is fantastic. This includes the Spurwinged and Egyptian Goose, and numerous species of duck and teal. Often many species can be taken in a single day providing a varied and mixed bag. They are flighted or decoyed onto fed dams and natural feeding areas. Camouflage material is an advantage but not essential.
-
Guineafowl. Dispel immediately any thoughts of fat pale blue domesticated birds with varying patterns of white claws that you may be used to. This is not what you will be shooting in South Africa. Guineafowl are indigenous here and are smaller, fitter, and much more streetwise than their domesticated cousins. They are best compared to pheasant on the Fens in Lincolnshire. To successfully drive these birds, parties of 4+ guns are required. Smaller groups will usually walk them up once the birds have been flushed into cover
